What are the camp fees?

Fees for the 2006 UWSP Swim Camp are $385 per weekly session for resident campers which include facility use, room and board, coaching, supervision, and camp T-shirt. The day camper fee is $265 per session, which includes facility use, coaching, supervision, camp T-shirt, and lunch throughout the week. A $100.00 nonrefundable payment is due to secure a space in both the resident and commuter camps. Balance of all camp fees are due 30 days prior to the start of the camp. After 30 days, the remaining balance must be made payable via money order or cashiers check and a $25 late fee will be charged. ALL camp fees must be paid and forms submitted prior to arrival at camp. Camp fees not paid by June 1, 2006 risk forfeiting camp space . All camp forms are available on the website at www.pointswimming.com.

What is the ratio of campers to coaches?

For each of the three swim sessions, the ratio is typically between 9:1 & 12:1. Afternoon and evening sessions find the ratio dropping to between 6:1 to 7:1 for more individual feedback and attention on strokes, turns and starts.

What is the focus of the training?

Training at the UWSP Swim Camp focuses upon both physical conditioning and stroke technique with analysis and instruction via TIVO, a hard drive digital video recorder system. One-hour sessions focusing on swim-specific dryland exercises, strength training and flexibility exercises are held daily. Short course yard training varies from one to two hours daily plus one 90-minute session focusing specifically on technique work daily. Stroke drills, as well as start and turn mechanics are included along with classroom sessions for lectures. Underwater TIVO video recording of each swimmer is included.

Can parents watch camp sessions?

Yes. Parents are certainly welcome and encouraged to observe pool sessions at the UWSP Swim Center. Parking is available next to the pool, located to the west of the pool off Isadore Street.

What about pre-existing injuries?

You are required to inform the camp director if an injury has occured after all medical forms have been submitted to UWSP. Our staff need to know each of the camper’s medical or health conditions that may limit their abilities to participate in all of the activities during the camp, including swimming, dryland, strength training or evening activities. “Challenge-by-choice” is strongly upheld at the UWSP Swim Camp. We are here to help individuals get faster, stronger and smarter about swimming.

What about medications and healthcare?

All prescribed medications must be submitted to the camp staff during camp check-in on Sunday. The staff will administer the medications as directed.

Healthcare

A physician’s statement of a camper’s ability to participate or proof of medical insurance is not required, but recommended. Before acceptance to camp, legal guardians must sign and agree to the following:

  • I am giving my consent in advance for medical treatment at an appropriate medical facility in case of illness or injury.
  • I am stating that I am aware of and accept the risk inherent in the program activity.
  • I agree to hold harmless and indemnify the Board of Regents of the University of Wisconsin System, and the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point, their officers, agents, and employees from any and all liability, loss, damages, costs, or expenses which are sustained, incurred or required arising out of the action of my son, daughter or ward in the course of the camp/event.

Campers’ parents or guardians will be billed for all medical services not covered by insurance rendered by The UWSP Student Health Care Center, or a local hospital. Camp forms may be obtained at www.pointswimming.com or will be enclosed per request in your pre-registration packet.

Is there a pick-up/ drip-off at the local airport?

Airport transportation will be provided to and from Central Wisconsin Airport, located in Wausau/Mosinee, prior to camp check-in and following check-out for each session for a $40 roundtrip fee. Please do not finalize travel plans until your camp acceptance is confirmed.

How are swimmers put into groups at camp?

Camp is divided into three ability groups based on age and submitted 100-yard freestyle and 100 and/or 200 IM times. Each camper is challenged according to ability and age. In addition, elite sprint and distance training sessions are available to those ages 13 and older. For more information on Elite & Distance Training sessions, read more about the training at the camp website or simply contact Justin Stoffel, camp director at (715) 346-2598.

What facilities will be used on campus?

All pool sessions are held at the UWSP Swimming Center on the UWSP campus. Known to be one of the fastest pools in the state, the UWSP pool spreads 8 lanes wide, includes a diving well and a therapy pool. The dryland and strength sessions of the camp will be held within the UWSP strength center, built in 1991 and used for the Jacksonville Jaguars NFL football team in 1994.

Is my child be supervised at all times?

Each camper is assigned to a group overseen by assigned counselors, and there are always two staff members living on each camp floor, including the Camp Director. The UWSP dorms require everyone to show ID (nametags) in order to enter the complex. Campers are always supervised at the dorm, field trips, walks to/from the pool, all pool and dry-land sessions, and in the evenings. Campers are to be in their rooms at 9:55 p.m., with room checks performed at 10:10 p.m. Supervision and safety is a major concern here at the UWSP Swim Camp. Experienced and mature male & female coaches & counselors provide 24-hour supervision for all swimmers. All employees of UWSP must pass a background check conducted by the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point Human Resources Department. The coaches and counselors at the UWSP Swim Camp lead through example!

What other activities are there?

Here at UWSP, we believe an important part of our swim camp involves and promotes building friendships. Campers are encouraged to participate in several fun, safe, and challenging recreational activities. Afternoon activities are planned from 1:00- 2:30 PM and 7-9:30 p.m. Sunday-Wednesday, following the evening training sessions. Some of the planned activities include a scavenger hunt, camp fire & smore night, tye-dye t-shirt fun, and movie night. More than one activity is planned per evening and supervised by the camp staff. All campers are encouraged to join the fun!

Can roomates be requested?

Requests for roommates are welcomed, but cannot be guaranteed. Roommate requests must match on the registration forms. Please do not list more than one person for a roommate. All roommates are assigned according to age no more than three years difference. Every effort will be made to place campers and teammates as close together as possible. It is recommended that roommates/suitemates send their applications together to be in the same session. Hurry, camp is likely to fill quickly!

Where do the campers stay durring camp?

Campers are housed two per room in one of the UWSP dormitories, located within a 5 minute walking distance of the UWSP Swimming and food centers. The male and female campers & counselors are separated by floors which provide bathrooms & private shower stalls. The staff recommend that the campers use the pool showers to save time here at camp. Campers are allowed to bring snacks and drinks to keep in their rooms. The basement of the dorm houses a large TV/game room for on-site recreation.

What should we pack for the dorm?

All campers will be provided bed linens, but its best to bring a pillow. A sleeping bag also works well. Linens are included in the dorm fee, but any damages in the dorm room are to be paid for prior to leaving camp. You will need to send toiletries and two to three towels with your camper. No TV’s are allowed, but hand-held games, CD/MP3 players, snacks and drinks are allowed. The camp is not responsible for any lost or stolen items.

Within your camp fees, the dorms provide the following services:
  • Linens, pillow, and blanket.
  • Clean sheets and pillow case issued weekly.
  • Towels and washcloth provided with one daily exchange upon request
  • All rooms will have a phone.

How much spending money should I send with my camper?

Campers should bring $30-75 that can be held in the camp bank during the week. All meals are provided, but when hunger strikes, evening pizza and sub orders are permitted. Campers may also want to purchase a souvenir from the UWSP University Center. Any money not used will be returned during checkout on Thursday. Because there is a $30 fee for a lost room key and a $6.00 replacement ID fee, we reserve the right to subtract the charges from the bank prior to its Thursday closing. The camp is not responsible for the loss of money not stored in the camp bank!

Can parents visit or live in the dorm?

For security reasons, check-in and check-out days are the only days visiting parents are allowed on camp floors, unless living amongst us on campus. Parents are allowed to live in one of the UWSP dorms and eat meals with their campers during the week, but please allow your child to have a true camp experience by interacting with other campers. Part of this is allowing them to be on their own for a short period of time, but knowing that help is available if needed. Please contact the camp director for room & board prices with adult rates.
